Dayton High School Eligibility for Activities

As members of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), all Lyon County high schools are required to follow the rules of eligibility prescribed by that body. Students who participate in interscholastic athletics, drill team, cheerleading, student government, and other activities in competitive settings with other schools must meet academic eligibility requirements. During each season, students must have passed four classes for the semester immediately preceding the activity of participation. Activity participants will undergo a citizenship and academic check every three weeks for the duration of the activity season.

Eligibility every three weeks will be determined as follows:

1. An F academic grade renders the participant ineligible.

2. An Incomplete academic grade renders the participant ineligible until the work is completed.

3. A U citizenship grade renders the participant ineligible.

4. All grades are cumulative, inclusive of all assignments to date throughout the semester.

Failure to meet these criteria render the student ineligible to participate for at least the following week (Monday through Monday). Ineligible students may become eligible by presenting a note to the Assistant Principal from the teacher of the course where he or she has not met eligibility requirements. This note must indicate that the failing grade has been raised to a passing grade or that an incomplete has been made up. Ineligible students may not participate for a one-week period, even though their eligibility is restored. After a week of non-participation, the student may again participate as soon as a return to eligibility form is signed by the teacher and is submitted to the Assistant Principal. Students who are declared ineligible remain ineligible until they present evidence of eligibility or until they are determined eligible at the subsequent eligibility check.

Ineligible students may practice with their team, but they may not play in a contest, ride or sit with the team during a contest, be with or near the team during a contest, or suit up for games.
